Diamonds are Hard. Diabetes is Harder.
In Type-1 diabetes, the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is the hormone that helps the body to take up sugar, or glucose, from the blood into the cells and use it for energy. If there is not enough insulin, the body creates different sources of fuel by breaking down fat or muscle which leads to the development of an alternative fuel source called ketones. If this process goes on for long enough, the ketone levels rise leading to a dangerous and potentially fatal condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
Currently Type-1 Diabetes cannot be cured and It cannot be prevented.
According to the 2020 CDC report on National Diabetes Statistics, approximately 9.7% of high schoolers have diabetes, making it a critical factor to consider in education. Study’s also show that GPA’s are on average lower for students who had poor self-management than those who maintained good metabolism (blood sugar plays a major role in metabolism). There is also evidence that suggests children with diabetes may experience behavioral difficulties which affect academic performance.
A person with diabetes needs to monitor and sustain blood sugar to lead a healthy life but glucose management can take one to three hours a day on average and, if done incorrectly, can lead to even more time taken out of one’s day due to the side effects of abnormal blood sugar. Diabetic students will often have to leave the classroom to access insulin or nutrition. Resulting in even more time lost.
Diabetes Can Be Costly
People diagnosed with diabetes, on average, have medical expenditures 2.6 times higher than what would be expected without diabetes.According to the CDC, on average, a person with type-1 diabetes will incur annual medical expenditures of $19,736. Glucose-lowering medications and diabetes supplies account for more than 17% of these medical costs.
